Wimbledon Introduces Video Review System for the First Time.

Wimbledon court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in implementing video review technology.

Video review technology will be launched at The Championships this year.

Athletes will gain the right to challenge certain rulings from the chair umpire, following the practice already in operation at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

This innovation is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One throughout the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This move comes just a season following the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which terminated the 147-year tradition of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the official to review other situations, such as:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball touched an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Potential hindrance end of a rally.

Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the number of reviews a player can request.

Practical Application

An illustrative case occurred in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a difficult call for the official, but thought his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and ruled Draper was responsible for hindrance, awarding the point to his opponent.

Growing Trend

This technology are not new for major tournaments. It was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have the system implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Further Updates

A further change at Wimbledon this year involves the introduction of graphical cues on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain whether a shot was out or in.

In other news, with precisely 100 days to go until the start of the Championships, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
