Users Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Medications Gain Back Weight Far More Rapidly Than Those on Conventional Diets
A recent study suggests that people who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass much more quickly than those who stop conventional diet and exercise programs.
Research printed in a leading health publication shows that while overweight people can lose about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"People using these medications should be cognizant of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain means a reversion to starting mass in about a year and a half.
Analyzing Therapies
The study, which looked at 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.
The team point out that individuals who lose weight through dieting generally see a less rapid weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Rapid Rebound
Doctors propose the mechanism of the injections explains the accelerated rebound.
These medications copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.
"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations far above than normal may cause the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could lessen responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating far more likely."
A Chronic Disease?
Health authorities advise the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
Many experts argue that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment might need to be long-term.
This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "highlight the persistent nature of obesity," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.
Patient Testimonies
People who have discontinued the jabs explain a intense resurgence of hunger.
"I experienced a trigger flipping and you become starving," recalled an individual.
The struggle is exacerbated if individuals have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Significant Use
Survey data indicate that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.
- Use is more common among women than males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, researchers emphasize that while the jabs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and lasting health benefits hinges on combined lifestyle changes.
