The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Triumph at The Game Awards — Another Award Type Might Solve This

Whenever a major honors show nears, one notices a demand for the addition fresh award types to acknowledge overlooked contributions and satisfy the passions of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.

A fellow writer has already made supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are board games, this being a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front because like all dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification supporting my request remains most pressing and important of all. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; it remains highly personal, and typically spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why cinema institutions avoid this approach. Yet it remains a necessary evil for the industry of video games, which are so diverse they barely qualify a single creative category.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.

Present Award Structure

Leading game ceremonies offer these award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these classifications actually cover numerous genres, making space possible for numerous titles.

This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Consider three of recent excellent titles, all very different: building puzzles from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. Which classification works between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.

Acknowledgment Issues

Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles released every year lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match for categories like Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.

  • A renowned logic title got overlooked in any category that year
  • A different innovative game missed out that year
  • A beloved organization game was overlooked recently
  • Just some brain-teasers managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications

Importance of Logic Titles

These are often compact experiences, yet the craft behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games stand as most engaged experiences globally continuing this trend for many years.

The legendary block-stacking game challenges well-known building titles claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it also contends as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, while interacting across multiple categories.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these are games that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers operate at the demanding boundary of video game design, developing some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay decades.
