Resurgent Daniil Medvedev Claims Maiden Championship in Nearly 30 Months
Nineteen of Medvedev's twenty-one championships have been earned on hard courts
A resurgent Daniil Medvedev claimed his maiden title for 882 days with success over Frenchman Moutet in the Almaty Open title decider.
The athlete, a ex- world number one, has endured a torrid period, managing just a single victory at the major tournaments and undergoing a meltdown at the US Open.
His varied form on the professional circuit - and difficulties with his serve in specific - led to him exiting of the top ten and eventually splitting with long-term mentor Gilles Cervara.
Presently training with his coach and Rohan Goetzke, the tennis star has gradually advanced in the recent weeks - peaking in a tightly fought 7-5 4-6 6-3 triumph over challenger Moutet.
This marks his maiden trophy following the Rome competition and maiden on a hardcourt since March of 2023.
Victory also indicates Medvedev has secured twenty-one championships at 21 distinct competitions.
"It's the first time I have attended a tournament with my children together, so to win a trophy is particularly special," said ranked player Daniil Medvedev.
"This title is in dedication of my second daughter Victoria, because the maiden victory I achieved when my child my daughter was born was for her."
The athlete, the 2021 US Open champion, had been defeated in his last six title deciders, featuring in Halle in the past months.
His defensive strategy and frequent outbursts on court had prompted some to wonder if his ability to compete at the top level was over.
However the player has made changes in recent weeks, making an effort to approach the net and compete aggressively, reinforced by an enhanced serving game.
The champion fought back from a break down in the first set against the tricky opponent, winning 4 of the last five games to take the lead.
The pair exchanged service breaks in the second set before the challenger, attempting for his initial ATP Tour title, took control to push for a decider.
Moutet rescued four early-game chances in a tight third set before Medvedev won the break to fifteen to secure the win.
Appropriately, Medvedev clinched the win with a rally at the net, with his opponent unable to control a shot after a lengthy match.
