Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Large-Scale Displacement Reported

The island nation was severely impacted by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, resulting in at least two people dead and displaced more than 1.4 million individuals.

Officials stated that the massive storm caused extensive flash flooding, storm surges, mudslides, and destructive high-velocity gusts, prompting the relocation of 1.4 million residents nationwide.

Extensive Damage and Rescue Efforts

In Pandan, Catanduanes, a severely affected area, disaster response teams documented rising waters reaching the tops of houses and homes washed out by the powerful currents.

“Our personnel rescued 14 individuals who were trapped on the roof surrounded by water in a flood-prone area,” an emergency official explained. One resident frantically contacted us, saying his home’s roof was about to be ripped off due to the storm. We rescued him and four relatives.”

As of Monday morning, officials confirmed at least two deaths: a drowning victim in Catanduanes and a second individual who died after her home gave way on Samar island.

Typhoon Strength and Projected Path

The intense storm weakened to a severe tropical storm early Monday as it crossed the main island, where the capital is located.

Per meteorological authorities, the storm’s sustained wind speed dropped from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, though wind bursts were still reaching over 170 mph.

The cyclone is expected to continue weakening as it moves north toward Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The national disaster response service indicated efforts were ongoing to assess damage to infrastructure and homes.

Approximately 6,000 evacuation centres were activated to temporarily house tens of thousands of households.

Recent Context and Environmental Factors

The typhoon hit just days after Typhoon Kalmaegi, that claimed at least 224 people and left dozens unaccounted for before moving on toward Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Search operations for those still missing were halted recently over risks for rescue workers.

The climate crisis is causing tropical storms more intense and frequent. Fung-wong is the 21st typhoon to hit the Philippines in 2025.

Researchers have found that the frequency of super-typhoons striking the islands has increased by more than 100% over the last two decades.

Global assessments suggest that severe weather events cause an average of US$3.5 million in losses for the Philippines every year.

The Philippine president declared an emergency declaration on Thursday due to the extensive devastation from Kalmaegi and the expected damage from the new storm.
