EU Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US against five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities argue the regulations are necessary to control hate speech and falsehoods.
